INTASC.8
STANDARD: The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner.
Specific Category of Standard:
INTASC.8.A K: The teacher understands the characteristics, uses, advantages, and limitations of different types of assessments (e.g. criterion-referenced and norm-referenced instruments, traditional standardized and performance-based tests, observation systems, and assessments of student work) for evaluating how students learn, what they know and are able to do, and what kinds of experiences will support their further growth and development.
INTASC.8.B K: The teacher knows how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments appropriate to the learning outcomes being evaluated and to other diagnostic purposes
Understanding Sentence:
At this point in my journey, INTASC Standard 8 means that the teacher understands and is able to use various forms of assessment to evaluate the students current ability and learning type so that the teacher can plan learning experiences accordingly.

The artifacts, Running Record and Rubric for Tessellation Activity, demonstrate Standard 8. Each artifact exemplifies the use of a different type of assessment used for different purposes. The Running Record shows that I am able to take an assessment of a student's reading performance as they read a leveled book. After the assessment was taken, I went back through and evaluated the different types of mistakes the student made. This shows that I am able to assess what the student's performance to date and am able to plan instruction accordingly. The Tessellation Rubric shows that I am able to construct a fair and appropriate grading scale for assessment of student work after a concept has been taught. These artifacts exemplify my understanding of the importance that assessment and evaluation plays in the learning process and can create and perform different effective assessment strategies.
Project
The two artifacts, Running Record and Rubric for Tessellation Activity, are examples of who I am as a learner by demonstrating my practice in creating and performing assessments. Both require critical thinking and proper execution to be effective. The Rubric had to be well thought out to assess what the student came away with after a lesson had been taught. The Running Record's purpose is to assess the performance level of an emergent reader by actively taking notes and shows that I am able to accurately evaluate the types of errors the student has made. In guided readings and minilessons, I will be able to take this one step further and teach the skills the students need based on the miscues I evaluated in the running record. The skills I have described are ones that must be practiced and mastered to become proficient in creating and performing assessments. These skills are providing me with the tools I need on the journey to becoming the teacher I am.
